Latest research sparked a fierce debate in the United States: 56% of American citizens believe that H-1B workers take jobs away from domestic workers. This stance further deepens the debate on the role of foreign experts in the US economy and labor market.

Program H-1B visa enables US companies to hire highly educated foreign professionals in specialized fields that require at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Although employers must prove that no US workers are available for the same position and that foreign workers are provided with a fair salary, many citizens still express dissatisfaction.

Survey results

The research was conducted by the application Blind, an anonymous community of verified professionals, which between August 25 and September 3, 2025, included 4,230 respondents—H-1B workers, green card holders, and U.S. citizens.

The results showed major differences in perception:

  • 70% total respondents believes that H-1B workers play a key role in the development of American companies.
  • However, only 49% of American citizens share that opinion, while waiting 87% foreign professionals highlights their importance.
  • When it comes to priority in hiring, 60% American citizens believes that US citizens and green card holders should be given priority. Conversely, only 11% of H-1B workers i 35% permanent residents share this attitude.

Particularly worrying is the fact that one out of three respondents (33%) sees H-1B workers as direct competition. That percentage among Americans reaches as high as 56%, while it is dividing it 9% H-1B workers.

Technology sector in focus

The highest tensions are in tech industry, where H-1B visas are most used. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon i PayPal found themselves at the center of the debate. While some argue that these companies are „taking jobs from Americans and giving them to foreigners,“ others warn that abolishing or restricting H-1B visas would only encourage the relocation of innovation to other countries.

The debate over H-1B visas is once again dividing the American public. While part of the population sees foreign workers as a threat, others believe they contribute to innovation, market expansion, and the global competitiveness of the U.S. economy. It is clear that the controversy will continue, especially in light of political pressures and legislative proposals that could further restrict legal immigration.
