Pelosi: I call on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office due to the riots at the Capitol, and announced that if that does not happen, she may initiate impeachment proceedings.

“I join Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer in calling on Vice President Pence to remove the president immediately by invoking the 25th Amendment,” Pelosi said.

“If the Vice President and the Cabinet do not act, Congress may be prepared to initiate impeachment, which is the opinion of my caucus, as well as the American people,” Pelosi said.

Recall that Schumer called on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which allows the vice president and a majority of the president's cabinet to declare the head of state “unfit” to continue performing his duties and remove him from power.

Schumer also said that if Pence refuses, then Congress should initiate impeachment proceedings.

“This president should not remain in office for a day longer,” Schumer added.

According to certain US media outlets, Trump's ministers discussed the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution.

Under that amendment, which was adopted following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, if the vice president and a majority of the cabinet submit a written declaration to the president pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office, the vice president shall immediately assume the powers and duties as acting president.
