How and when should kitchen equipment be replaced?

Food that ends up on the plate often goes through several key tools in the kitchen, but few people think about the potential dangers.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cleaning and disinfection are important, but there are other kitchen allies that deserve attention.
Sponges
Although they help you clean, sponges are often an unnoticeable source of bacteria. Cleaning expert Robin Murphy recommends replacing sponges every week to maintain hygiene.
2. Cutting boards
The cutting board is often a place where raw meat, vegetables, and bread meet, creating ideal conditions for bacteria growth. According to Murphy, the rule is to replace the board at least once a year.
3. Ice cube trays
If you notice an unusual taste in the ice, the reason may be odors from the freezer transferring to the ice. Murphy advises regularly cleaning ice trays to preserve freshness.
4. Wooden cutlery
Wooden spoons, stirring spoons, and ladles are more porous than other materials, so they should be replaced if they show cracks or retain odors and stains that are difficult to remove.
5. Coffee maker
Do not neglect cleaning your coffee maker. Calcium and mold can build up inside the machine, Murphy warns. In addition to cleaning the exterior, regularly clean the water reservoir.
