US: Chicago among cities with the most mosquitoes
Once again, Chicago has been ranked as one of the worst cities in the US regarding the presence of mosquitoes.
The city has secured fifth place on Orkin’s Top 50 ‘mosquito cities’ list for the second consecutive year, the pest control company announced in a statement.
In a surprising shift from previous years, Los Angeles has moved into first place. This ousted Atlanta, which had been in first place for the past seven years.
This year, three West Coast cities joined the list for the first time: Fresno, San Diego, and Seattle.
According to Orkin, time spent in yards and outdoor activities increased in 2020. This trend is expected to continue in 2021, especially as summer approaches.
Mosquitoes typically become active when overnight temperatures are higher. The breeding season can begin as early as May and last until September.
According to the US CDC, mosquitoes can bite both day and night. They look for warm places as temperatures begin to drop.
To protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites, you can use one of the insect repellents registered by the Environmental Protection Agency. You can also wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, the CDC advises.
Furthermore, it is recommended to use an air conditioner or to protect windows and doors so that mosquitoes do not enter.
If you are unable to do this, it is recommended that you consider sleeping under a mosquito net.
The list of cities with the most mosquitoes, according to Orkin, looks like this.
