Chicago again supported students in Serbia (VIDEO)
Chicago, known as the home of one of the largest Serbian communities outside of Serbia, has once again attracted attention with its unique protest in support of students in Serbia.
A protest in front of the Serbian consulate in Chicago was held in solidarity with students who have been demanding justice for months regarding the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station.
The gatherers carried banners with messages such as: „Beyond borders, but not beyond the fight“, „With you with all our hearts“ and „Chicago is with the students“. Special attention was drawn by the sign „Ćaci is in Džigak“, carried by a little girl, symbolically connecting the protest with popular humor.
During the 15 minutes of silence, participants blocked the street while the police secured the gathering. The protest organizer, Pavle Steković, who moved to Chicago from Gornji Milanovac seven years ago, told Voice of America: „I found a better life in America, but Serbia is always in my heart. I support everyone in Serbia and I hope that justice will prevail.“
Steković pointed out that this time the protest gathered twice as many people as before, adding that many are disappointed with the current situation in Serbia. „All of us in the diaspora are giving our maximum support to the students and we hope for their victory,“ he concluded.
