Pritzker signed emergency order: Commission formed to monitor behavior of federal agents in Illinois

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has signed a new executive order establishing the Illinois Accountability Commission, an independent body tasked with monitoring the work of federal law enforcement agencies within the state.

This decision follows, as Pritzker stated, „increasingly frequent military-style operations conducted by federal authorities in Chicago, surrounding counties, and other parts of Illinois.“ The goal of the new commission will be to document the behavior of federal agents, examine potential abuses of authority, and propose concrete measures to ensure transparency and the protection of citizens' rights.

The commission will consist of nine members appointed by the governor, and its work will be supported by the Department of Human Rights. According to Pritzker, this move represents an important step toward accountability and respect for the law by all government authorities.

„It is our duty to ensure that the truth is recorded so that the public knows what their elected and appointed officials are doing, and so that the courts and Congress can take appropriate action,“ Pritzker stated during a press conference. „The federal government is pushing the boundaries of its authority and thereby intimidating communities, ignoring moral and legal responsibility. We will not respond to that with fear.“

Pritzker's office says that the commission will start working soon, and the first reports on its findings are expected as early as the beginning of 2026.
