Millions missing from healthcare: Chicago at the center of a scandal over a decision that shocked the public

The city of Chicago found itself at the center of a major scandal after it was revealed that tens of millions of $ intended for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic were returned to federal authorities—even before the deadline for their use had expired.

Although Mayor Brandon Johnson had previously promised to protect public health funds from the policies of President Donald Trump, decisions within the city's health system told a different story. Health Commissioner Dr. Olusimbo Ige decided to shut down multiple COVID-funded programs early and return the remaining money—despite the fact that the funds could have been used to monitor infections and improve health equity.

According to available data, as much as $81.4 million from key grants remained unused, while certain programs, such as wastewater virus monitoring and initiatives to help vulnerable communities, were abruptly shut down.

At the same time, more than 200 employees left or lost their jobs within the Chicago Department of Public Health, causing further turmoil. Critics claim that the layoffs and restructuring were carried out chaotically and without a clear plan, while some former workers speak of an atmosphere of fear and poor management.

One of the dismissed female epidemiologists, Hannah Matzke, openly criticized the leadership, stating that the decisions are harmful in the long run to the city's entire healthcare system.

On the other hand, Ige defends her actions, claiming that she had to adjust the budget due to funding cuts and that it was not possible to preserve all jobs. The mayor's office states that this is a matter of „responsible budget management.“.

However, many experts warn that with these moves Chicago has become more vulnerable to future health crises.
