A group of members of Congress accused Musk of profiting from anti-Israel propaganda
A group of 27 Democratic members of the US Congress has expressed concern that the X platform (Twitter) is profiting from premium accounts that they claim glorify violence against Israelis.
In a letter addressed to company owner Elon Musk and Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino, the lawmakers stated that reports from non-profit organizations show that people with premium accounts on X are „glorifying barbaric acts of violence against Israelis.”.
Company X has sued the watchdog group Media Matters for defamation after the nonprofit organization published a report stating that ads for major brands appeared alongside posts promoting Adolf Hitler and Nazism, Reuters reports.
„These reports showed that the X platform profits from spreading this creepy and harmful propaganda through account subscriptions and ad revenue, the MPs wrote, adding that much of the offensive content remained active despite being flagged by researchers.
These members of Congress pointed out that X profited from posts both through subscriptions and from ads displayed in replies to premium and regular posts.
„The social network X also financially benefited from the spread of obviously false and misleading content,” wrote US lawmakers.
As the British agency points out, advertising revenue in the United States has dropped by at least 55 percent year-on-year every month since Musk took over the former Twitter, Tanjug reports.
Advertisers have left the platform since Musk bought it for $44 billion in October 2022 due to some of his controversial posts and the layoffs of employees who worked on content moderation.
