Đukanović: The idea of a Greater Serbia is being revived, there is no doubt, Vučić is behind it
Greater Serbian nationalism wants to exploit geopolitical realignment, regardless of the fact that this has already cost the Balkans 150,000 human lives, Montenegrin President Milo Đukanović said in an interview with RTL television.
Speaking about the destabilization of the region over the past year, he pointed out that it is an attempt to revive old, retrograde policies of building large states in the Western Balkans and that an idea was launched, offered as an alternative to the 1990s, to create large, ethnically and religiously homogeneous states.
„That collapsed back then and was paid for with the lives of nearly 150,000 people. Now, probably spurred by geopolitical changes, the ideologues of those greater-state nationalisms are trying to revive that idea, and Montenegro is under attack because we know there is no ‘Greater Serbia’ with Montenegro as part of it, said Đukanović, as reported by RTCG.
He emphasized that there is no doubt that the top state leadership of Serbia, led by Aleksandar Vučić, is behind it.
After Serbia lost Kosovo, Montenegro seems like the most attractive compensation and an indispensable part for keeping the idea of a Greater Serbia alive, Đukanović believes.
According to him, the Serbian Orthodox Church is an instrument for the realization of Greater Serbian nationalism.
„In the nineties there were more of those instruments – the JNA, the Yugoslav police, the Yugoslav security service, customs, and laws – and today those no longer exist and only the Serbian Orthodox Church has remained, which agreed to be an instrument of the greater-state project, which is very clearly manifested in the current problems in Montenegro, Djukanovic said.
When asked if serious conflicts could occur in Montenegro, Đukanović assesses that it is not simple to deal with Serbia, especially if you know that behind it stands a geopolitical force such as Russia.
