British accidentally sent secret information to Russia's ally instead of the US

The British Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation after officials unwittingly sent an email containing classified data to a close Russian ally due to a typo.

Several emails intended for the Pentagon were sent to Mali due to the accidental omission of the letter „i“ in the email address, writes the Guardian. British officials sent the messages to an address ending with Mali's „.ml“ domain rather than the US military's „.mil“ domain.

This error in the US was discovered earlier this month, causing millions of military emails to be sent to Mali's address.

The British Ministry of Defence stated that it launched an investigation after a couple of emails were mistakenly sent to the wrong email domain, Index.hr reported.

„We are confident that the emails did not contain any information that could compromise operational security or technical data. All sensitive information is shared on systems designed to minimize the risk of misdirection.

Mali was among the six African countries to which Russian President Vladimir Putin promised free grain supplies following the collapse of the Black Sea grain deal with Ukraine.
