Brexit: A historic agreement has been reached, but what does it actually mean?
Four and a half years after the referendum on the UK's exit from the European Union, which was named Brexit, and nine months of negotiations on how fishing and business rules would be regulated – London and Brussels have reached a trade agreement.
„We have regained control of our money, borders, laws, and territorial waters,“ the UK Government announced.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen points out that the „deal is good, fair and balanced.“.
She added that it is time to turn a new leaf and look to the future, and that Britain remains a „reliable partner“ to them. Brexit had brought major changes.
„The clock is no longer ticking,“ pointed out Brussels' chief negotiator Michel Barnier.
„We have taken control of our laws and our destiny,“ said Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the conference.
He added that this is „Britain's biggest trade deal“ and that the country's shores are „independent for the first time since 1973.“
This comprehensive agreement, like the one Canada has, is worth £668 billion a year, Johnson stated.
„The Brexit deal will protect jobs across the country because it allows goods from Britain to be sold without tariffs and without quotas on the European market.“
„It enables our companies to do even more business with our European friends,“ Johnson pointed out.
Unlike Johnson, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is not satisfied with the agreement, accusing the British government of betraying the interests of the Scottish fishing industry.
